Gardens

Starting with Bantry House three miles away, there are 15 spectacular gardens to be found on the West Cork Garden Trail for garden enthusiasts. Also, don't miss Ireland's most outstanding garden island at Garnish Island in the sheltered harbour of Glengarriff in Bantry Bay, world renowned for its plant collection and Italian gardens.

Walking and Rambling

This stunningly scenic area is a haven for walkers and ramblers with some of the best coastal routes on our doorstep such as 'The Sheep's Head Way' which takes in a superb moorland crest and rugged cliffs as well as easy lowland terrain, including a loop walk on Whiddy Island, and is described as "the best walk in Ireland".

Other walks begin at Glengarriff, the gateway to the Beara Peninsula and feature walks for all levels of ability with distances from 750m to 11km with views of sea, rivers, mountains, lakes and forests. 'The Beara Way' incorporating part of the O'Sullivan Way is a great long coastal trek circling the magnificent peninsula with plenty of archaeological sites along the route.

For those wanting a quite stroll the Bantry Heritage Trail provides an informative look at the riches of the past.

Cycling

A great 120km long cycle route starts at Ballylickey and ends in Roaringwater Bay, near Ballydehob. The route travels down the northern side of Sheep’s Head Peninsula, then returns to Durrus and on to Ballydehob. Of course you can also hire a bike and just follow your nose to see where it will lead you.

Other must see places or things to do in West Cork include:

Mizen Head, the most southerly point in Ireland, the ancient Drombeg Stone Circle, boat trips for whale and dolphin watching, and the beautiful sandy beach at Barleycove, not to mention a host of cosy pubs full of music and chat, in colourful little villages dotted across this beautiful landscape.

There are two excellent golf courses close-by at Bantry and Glengarriff. Angling, boating horse-riding and bicycle hire are available locally and can be arranged with the hotel.
